Our Benbow Family, May 2007
Our Benbow Family, May 2007
(L to R) Pete, Charlie and his wife Stephanie, Katherine, John, Mary Katherine

Pete graduated from Davidson College, and plans a career in law and international relations, and he wants to join the JAG Corps after law school graduation. During his senior year at Davidson, he spent six weeks at the University of Cambridge in England, and a week in Columbia, South America, with a professor and fellow students.

Charlie is an alumnus of Virginia Military Institute, a captain in the US Marine Corps, and a Purple Heart recipient. He is currently serving on his sixth combat tour, his fourth time in Iraq. His first tour was in Iraq from January to July 2003, when his unit was in the Battle of Nasiriyah. He married Stephanie Lane, who is a wonderful addition to the family, and a talented photographer.

Katherine is a graduate of Hollins College and the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work, and is a licensed clinical social worker. She currently works as a care manager for a company serving disabled and senior citizens who wish to remain at home. In 1995, she was elected to replace the retiring Historian for the Charles Benbow family at the annual reunion in Greensboro. She has attended Samford University's Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research for six years, and goes to several genealogy conferences every year. Katherine also administers seven DNA surname projects at Family Tree DNA, including one for the Benbow family. In addition, she serves as the Assistant State Coordinator for NCGenWeb, as well as County Coordinator for seven counties in NCGenWeb and VAGenWeb.

John graduated from Davidson College and Duke University School of Medicine, and trained at the University of Colorado Affiliated Hospitals. He is a board-certified pediatrician. John has spent considerable time researching his namesake and uncle John Wesley Long Benbow's Army Air Force unit during World War II -- the 506th Fighter Group, which flew P-51 Mustangs off Iwo Jima. He is known far and wide as an excellent flyfisherman.

Mary Katherine is an alumna of NC State University and Hollins University. She works in development for non-profit agencies, and just relocated to another city in Virginia from the DC area. She is engaged to a wonderful man, who is a major in the US Marine Corps.

Benbow DNA Project at Family Tree DNA
We have a surname project at Family Tree DNA, with 29 members at present, including ten who live in the UK and Europe. Joining the study requires approval from the project administrator, and some help with cost is available if sufficient information is provided about a person's Benbow ancestral line, and it is a line that we would like to include in the study.
