    Notes
    • Some have mistakenly assumed that there was also a son named "William Dick, Jr." In old court records, "William Dick, Jr." simply meant that "Junior" was a younger man in the same community by the same name. It does not imply a father-son relationship -- or any family relationship at all, for that matter. The Guilford County deed that probably was misinterpreted between William Dick Senr. and William Dick Junr. contains the word "grandson" when referring to the younger man. There are only two known grandsons of William who carried that name, and one of them was too young to be signing a deed in 1810. William also mentioned his grandson William, son of James, in his will. There is no evidence for a son of William named William. Rev. Rankin's mention of him does not count as evidence. Rev. Rankin's ability to interpret court documents correctly was flawed, as indicated by other statements he made in his book on Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
