  • Notes
    • "Mrs. W. W. Crews, who was formerly Miss Verona Fries, of this city, visited her mother here yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Crews were married a few days ago in Durham, their marriage being a great surprise to all their friends. Their home is in Oxford, where Mr. Crews is engaged in the real estate and tobacco business." (Greensboro Daily Record, 3 August 1914, page 6)

Walter and Verona were living at 55 Williamsboro Street, Oxford, Granville County, NC, during the 1920 census, with the following household:
Walter Crews, head, age 39, born in NC, parents born in NC. Home owned & mortgaged. Employed as salesman with "horse & mule B'S."
Verona, wife, age 28, born in NC, parents born in NC.
Edward Hines, step-son, age 9, born in NC, parents born in NC, in school.
Mary Moss, servant, age 28, widowed, born in NC.

Walter and Verona were living at 208 Front Street, Oxford, during the 1930 census, with the following household:
Walter W. Crews, head, owns house worth 17,000; owns radio set, does not live on a farm, age 48, age at first marriage 32, works as a farmer on a farm, not a veteran
Verona F., wife, age 39, age at first marriage 23 (not true - was she ashamed of first marriage?), not employed.
Verona's son Edward is not in the household, and neither is anyone else.
