  • Notes
    • William Arthur Fries was the contractor chosen by Moses Cone to build his house near Blowing Rock, NC: "In October 1898, wagons laden with tons of nails, tools, and other materials lumbered out of Lenoir en route to Flat Top. Just three months later, the Watauga Democrat announced that 'Mr. Cone is now preparing to erect a magnificent residence on his estate at a a cost of $25,000. It will be on an elevated spot overlooking a lake that will cover 25 acres or more of land.' At that time, $100 to $200 would buy a habitable home outside Blowing Rock. Skeptics may have thought that the $25,000 estimate was an exaggeration, but if anything, the figure erred on the conservative side. The contractor who had calculated the costs had done a great deal of work for Moses Cone; in fact, W. A. Fries had already moved from Salisbury, North Carolina, to Greensboro, and then to the mill village at Proximity. If not actually in title, he was in fact the Cones' contractor-in-residence. According to published reports, Fries 'did all the building at Proximity,' presumably including the mill and the village. In any event, he had worked enough for the Cones that when he accompanied his client to Blowing Rock to 'figure on' a house, he surely wanted to give the best possible price."
