3 "It has been claimed that Joseph Alden had another daughter, Mary, who married, as his second wife, Samuel Allen, 1 January 1700 or 10 April 1700. No proof has been found; Asa W. Allen in his Genealogy of the Allen and Witter Families (1872), page 97, says that Samuel Allen's second wife was Mary Pratt. For a discussion of this problem see the Alden Gen, pages 100 and 101."

4 "John Miller, a native of England, born in 1624, was a member of the Grand Inquest, at Middleboro, in 1672. He was one of the proprietors of the "Twenty-six Men's Purchase," 1661-62, and was present at their meeting in 1677. Prior to April 29, 1678, he purchased a house lot of Edward Gray, and he was the owner of lot #154 in the South Purchase of 1673. He was also one of the owners of the Sixteen Shilling Purchase of 1675. John Miller lived on Thompson Street, not far from the brook in Middleboro, near the house of the late Elijah Shaw. He died May 11, 1720, in his 97th year, and his monument stands in the cemetery at the "Green," where rest the remains of six or more generations of his descendants. The surname of his wife Mercy is not known, but they were the parents of at least three children: John, Mary, and Elizabeth." 9 "The Benbows, Robert and wife Julia.
Robert Benbow (ca. 1848-1922) was one of the better known blacks in central Deep River in the early years of the century. Bob, as we called him, had worked for the Paris Benbows for many years before they moved to Oak Ridge, and I suspect that they assisted Bob Benbow and his wife Julia in getting the old Cornelius Carter home and a good part of the farm. In any event, Bob and Julia lived there from about 1905 to 1920, and they not only farmed but they also built and operated a distillery, not for making whiskey but sassafras oil. There was a good market for this oil, and there were a great many sassafras trees on the farm, and, what was more, Bob's neighbors allowed him to dig the roots from large sassafras trees on their farms. Bob built his distillery close to a strong spring just east of the house, and piped water from this spring to his plant. He operated his distillery for several years, and sold many gallons of sassafras oil which was used mainly for flavoring cakes, candies, and the like. Bob and Julie made a good living and were good neighbors. They died in the early 1920's, and were buried in the Saint John Baptist Church Cemetery. (See Churches in Deep River)."

----- Nancy: 34, F, W, keeping house
----- Sidie: 11, F, W, at school
----- Sareptsa: 9, F, W, at school, cannot read or write
----- Josephine: 7, F, W, cannot read or write

1880 census of Harris Township, Franklin County, NC; dwelling 23, family 27:

----- Saraphna, W, F, 16, daughter, single, domestic labor, cannot write, born NC, father born NC, mother born NC

1900 census of Harris Township, Franklin County, NC; dwelling 147, family 158 (there are a number of corrections on this page); all born in NC, all parents born in NC; Sidney is the only one who can read or write:
Richards, Sidney: head, W, M, Nov 1836, 63, m(arried), 30 (yrs married), farm laborer
----- Nancy: wife, W, F, May 1842, 58, m(arried), 30 (yrs married), 3 children born, 3 still living,
Perry, Mary: niece, W, F, Oct 1888, 11, single
----- Seth: nephew, W, M, Mar 1878, 22, single, farmer
(Since Seth is listed on the farm schedule and Sidney is not, it appears that Seth takes primary responsibility for the farm. Both are listed as renting, Sidney as living in a house, while Seth is listed as living on a farm, but they are in the same household.)

Sidney cannot be found in the 1910 census, so he may have died before then. Can't find Nancy in the 1910 yet. She could be the Nancy who is living with a Robert Richards household in 1920, but she is listed as the grandmother of the head of household, and she had no sons, so, unless one of her daughters married a Richards, she may not be that person.

Olive W. Moore, age 13, born IN
Walter Moore, age 11, born IN
Ida P. Moore, age 7 or 9, born IN
Phoebe Sofield, age 103, born NJ
There are three notes to make on this census record:
(1) There is no Otto, but there is an Olive. The sex column has a F instead of an M, but it still may be a mistake, since the age and middle initial are the same -- probably due to the census taker having problems reading his notes.
(2) There is no Milford in this census, but there is Ida, who is age 20 in the 1880 census. It is assumed that Milford died, and that Ida was born late in 1860 or in 1861.
(3) Phoebe Sofield would have been age 55 when Susan was born, so it's doubtful she's Susan's mother, but she could be the mother's older sister or a grandmother.
